Oh boy was this an adventure! June 13th at around noon I got on a bus in Phoenix. It was about 110 degrees (as usual) and every seat was full on this bus to Los Angeles. By the time I got on board there was one seat left directly across from the overfull toilet, that of course was in constant use due to the large number of people drinking lots of liquids to try and stay cool, because yep: the air conditioning system was not working, nor was it possible to open the windows. Every time someone opened that toilet door everyone gagged and turned green -- it was REALLY that bad!! But wait! That is not all! We got as far as Casa Grande by about 4:30 PM (usually an hour out of Phoenix) and stopped somewhere along I-10 for a dinner break (not that I was remotely interested in food at this time). Suddenly one of the passengers snapped and came up with a huge shard of broken glass from somewhere and got into a shouting match with the bus driver! Great. Everyone off the bus. Wait. Enraged person will not get off. OK, everyone gets off the bus. Still no dice. Enraged passenger will not leave. Everyone back on the bus. Bus driver leaves to call cops. Cops come. Everyone gets off bus. Enraged guy subdued and handcuffed -- his ride is over. Everyone gets back on the bus, and the long haul across the desert ends at about 10:00 PM in a filthy LA Bus depot. At this point I decide to get off the Greyhound system and walk a few blocks to the Amtrak station. There I catch an Amtrak bus to Bakersfield. In Bakersfield at last get on a luxurious train with a plug-in for my laptop and a vastly improved ride. Whew, what a trip!
