Doored means a car door opened suddenly in front of a cyclist. On April 19, 2006 I was riding my bike south on 15th Street around 'K' & 'L' Streets when a valet opened the door of a BMW in front of me. I hit the brakes and then the ground, landing on my left elbow which caused a severe fracture of my humurus. The valet hurried past me to move my bike out of the traffic lane, and I found myself unable to rise above a seated position. I asked the valet to please come help me up, which he did. A small white car had come to a stop and witnessed the incident so I walked over to the passenger side and got contact info, then somehow got over to the sidewalk where I collapsed against a building. The valet then went on parking cars and completely ignored my repeated request for him to call 911 and his name and company he worked for. Fortunately I had my cell phone and made 2 911 calls myself, the second call was 13 minutes after the first. Finally a person who said he was a manager handed me a business card just before the paramedics arrived. As of this writing, July 10, 2007. Neumann Enterprises has continued to stonewall and avoid taking any responsibility for their employee's mistake. I have a plate and twelve screws holding my arm together. I have nerve damage on my left arm, limited range of motion and constant pain, numbness and discomfort. I was not insured so have had to spend savings and go into debt just to pay for the surgery and therapy so far, more is needed. Many professionals and Sutter hospital are waiting for the rest of the money owed to them. All because Neumann Enterprises refuses to accept the civic responsibility for the (illegal) action of their employee. And people wonder why we need personal injury lawyers!? I have retained Larry Eslinger of Penney & Associates. Update October 2007 - The insurance company has settled and paid all medical costs plus damages.
